Restoration of Meadow Bird Habitats
(LIFE06 NAT/DK/000158)

The conservation status of the meadow birds is so unfavourable that e.g. the Ruff is at risk to disappear from Denmark as a breeding bird during few years.
The most important breeding localities have been selected for focused action and management. They include existing breeding localities for Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit and Dunlin and even some localities, which earlier have been known as important breeding sites for these meadow birds.

EU-Life contribution:     714,466 €

The first EU LIFE scheme for a major marine nature restoration project: rebuilding of offshore marine cavernous boulder reefs in the habitat at Læsø
                               Trindel in northern Kattegat.
The project is designed as a pilot project at large scale, aiming at providing knowledge on how to rebuild important marine habitats, including knowledge on the relationship between the new restored nature and stocks of fish.

Restoration of raised bogs in Denmark with new methods (LIFE05 NAT/DK/000150)Restoration of raised bogs in Denmark with new methods
(LIFE05 NAT/DK/000150)

Active raised bogs in Denmark has been under great pressure and more than 90% has been lost. Apart from one relative large active raised bog the raised bogs are small and threatened by desiccation caused by former draining and peat excavation, tree encroachment and nutrient enrichment from atmospheric deposition of N or from influx of surface water from neighbouring agricultural areas.
At most areas the cover of Sphagnum is not dense enough to secure peat formation and peat accumulation.

EU-Life contribution:  1,407,578 €

Action for sustaining the population of Euphydryas aurinia (LIFE05 NAT/DK/000151)Action for sustaining the population of Euphydryas aurinia
(LIFE05 NAT/DK/000151)

The butterfly Marsh Fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) has experienced a rapid decline in Denmark due to fragmentation of habitats and populations. Together with a continuing decline in quality of existing and potential Euphydryas aurinia habitats, this means that the conservation state of Euphydryas aurinia today is highly unfavourable. Only 8 small sub-populations remains, and it is crucial to reverse the negative trends as soon as possible.

Total project budget: 580,528 €
EU-Life contribution:  290,264 €

The freshwater pearl mussel is threatened in several regions of Sweden, and in large parts of Europe. In Denmark it is only found in the River Varde Å - a river included in the Houting-project.
Still, Sweden is a core zone for the mussel, which means that we have an international responsibility for the species’ long-term survival.
