The present 0.75 m high weir at Hjortkær Fish Farm, supplying water for the fish farm production, totally blocks the free migration of most fish species in River Sneum Å.
With the Houting-project the fish farm will be purchased and the weir dismantled.
The 0.75 m difference in water levels will be equalised by a 7.5-9 m wide stone and gravel riffle with a gradient of 4-5 ‰ and a length of approx. 110 m . The houting - and all other fish species – will thereby gain unhindered access to approx. 6 km watercourse upstream the present fish farm.
Furthermore the closure of the fish farm will result in a significant reduction of pollution loads to River Sneum Å and the Wadden Sea . This will further contribute to the improvement of the habitat conditions for houting downstream the fish farm.
