Fole Fish Farm was converted into a so-called model fish farm in 2006. Contrary to an ordinary low-tech fish farm, modern high-tech model fish farms do not use water from the stream but entirely recirculated ground water.
Furthermore, the amount of discharge water is minimized and led to a water treatment plant. A model fish farm does hence not need the stream as water supply or as a drain. Thereby the weir becomes unnecessary.
In spite of that, the 1.5 m high weir, that previously diverted water from the River Fladså into the fish farm, continuously blocks the free migration of most fish species in the river.
The Houting-project will demolish the weir and seal the previously used water-intake and outfall from the fish farm. The difference in water levels will be equalised by constructing an approx. 800 m long riffle with stones and gravel.
With the project the hydrological continuity on the site will be restored, whereby houting and other fish species will gain access to 8 km upstream watercourse.
